How to fit an image under a file-size limit

Pixels and kilobytes measure different things. A reliable export needs both.

Start with the actual requirement

Read the receiving site’s current rules. A maximum size of 200 KB is not a required width of 200 pixels. Some sites use decimal KB (1,000 bytes), while others use 1,024 bytes. PixelDock uses decimal KB and shows the actual byte count in your result.

Try quality before dimensions

For photographs, JPG or WebP often gives a smaller file than PNG. Start with a reasonable quality and inspect fine text and edges. The target-size compressor searches for an encoding that stays under your limit.

When a smaller image is necessary

If quality alone is not enough, allow the tool to reduce dimensions. If a form also requires exact dimensions, keep dimensions locked. The tool reports an unmet target instead of claiming success.

Inspect the final file

Check faces, text and fine detail at full size before submitting. Compression cannot guarantee that an application, identity photo or other content will meet a platform’s nontechnical rules.

Put it into practice.
